The US status question
Is this an approved route to care?
Ask what permits the exact product to be supplied, even when the offer looks formal.
Here, FDA refers to the Food and Drug Administration, the US agency for drugs.
For use in the United States, no thymosin alpha-1 product had FDA approval as of September 28, 2026.

What do the compounding rules mean?
Compounding means preparing medicine for an order by making or mixing it, instead of supplying a drug made ahead of time.
Compounded medicines, at the September 26, 2026 check, had no FDA approval; before sale, FDA carries out no review of their quality, whether they work or how safe they are.
Compounding can meet a medical need, but it must satisfy the rules that apply to the product and its ingredients.
Did taking back the request allow pharmacy use?
People asked FDA to add thymosin alpha-1 to its list of raw ingredients for pharmacy-made medicines. Those who made that request later took it back. FDA’s webpage marked current April 22, 2026 still lists concerns about harm from these medicines.
A pharmacy does not gain permission to use an ingredient when a request to add it to an FDA list is taken back.
As of September 28, 2026, thymosin alpha-1 was absent from the allowed-ingredient list for regular compounding pharmacies.
On December 4, 2024, a panel advising FDA voted against adding the ingredient to that pharmacy-use list. The vote covered ingredients named thymosin alpha-1 and thymosin alpha-1 acetate.
An advisory vote gives the FDA advice; it does not itself change the law.
What about approval in another country?
As of September 28, 2026, Italy’s drug register authorised thymalfasin (Zadaxin), with a prescription required.
FDA described the Italian use in 2024 as an add-on to flu vaccination for people whose defences against illness are weak.
That foreign authorisation does not create permission to sell the drug in the United States.
